Derwen show

To Derwen, the penultimate show of the season, and one of my favourites.

It is exceptionally well attended this year, with very high standards among the exhibitors.  Indeed, the shows this season have all had big attendances; I think it must be a popular reaction to the recession, with people showing support for community values at a difficult time.

Next week, it is Cerrigydrudion show, the last of the season and one of the biggest.  I will miss it, because I will be speaking in Cardiff, but Sara will go.   Eryl Williams always says that once Cerrig show is over, you’re almost into Christmas.  A depressing thought, but probably true.

Unguided missile

To Derwen, the smallest of the summer shows, but in many respects the most fun, with less emphasis on serious competition and more on such traditional country pursuits as welly whanging.

The weather was unseasonably cold, but did not deter the large and cheerful crowd of show goers. I had a go, as I always do, at whanging the welly, and did marginally better than last year, when I succeeded in landing my welly on the bonnet of a parked car. This year, I almost hit the genial master of ceremonies, Eryl Williams, who is a tremendously hardworking mainstay of almost all the local shows.

The welly is a missile of unpredictable aerodynamic qualities; every year I vow to practice my technique before the Derwen show and every year I forget.

There was the usual display of fine vintage tractors. This year, my attention was attracted to the above advertisement for our last Prime Minister but one, appropriately decked out in livery of gleaming Tory blue.
