Passion for the pier

The second Victoria Pier meeting was again extremely well attended.  I’d estimate that at least a couple of hundred people turned up at Colwyn Bay’s St Paul’s church, which was a much more spacious venue than the Town Hall.

Candidates for membership of the steering committee came forward and all spoke with passion, not only about the pier, but about the town itself.  All of them clearly loved Colwyn Bay and all were anxious to see it regenerated.

The meeting unanimously approved the election of the members of the committee.  Now we can make progress.   I will meet the committee after the general election to discuss the way forward.

I have enormous admiration for the people of Colwyn Bay.  They are proud of their town and its history and want to see it improve.  Let us hope that the issue of the pier can become the catalyst for something even bigger.

  1. A big thanks from me again for everyone’s continued support… there is a lot of passion there, and now a great bunch of people with a good variety of skills. Behind the scenes, lots of legal stuff is now simmering away quite nicely. My legal team are advising on matters which should finally push things to a resolution by mid-summer we think. Keep up the “pier pressure” !

  2. Am I being naive, but will there never be any money available whilst Mr Hunt does not finally relinquish the ownership issue and be happy for the pier to be passed into ownership of a trust?

Were there any other parliamentary candidates at the meeting?

I for one would not be happy for public money in any great amount being used for a private venture.

  4. Oh dear… another jealous sheep…

Prasit: Your first port of call should be Cllr Chris Hughes who has been “Chairman” of the “Friends of the Pier Trust” for over a decade… go and ask him what he has done, how much funding he has been able to find, and what offer he has made to purchase the pier from either myself, or the previous owner.

I am fed up repeating the same thing over and over again… I have no problem whatsoever in principle with some kind of public ownership of the pier.

The pier being in private ownership DOES NOT IN ANY WAY PREVENT a “trust” or some other body applying for funding in principle – once that funding is agreed in principle, then I will be absolutely delighted to discuss transferring of ownership and the safeguarding of my investment thus far.

CCBC have had over 6 years to come to me with a funding proposal, and have not approached me ONCE. To the best of my knowledge a firm proposal was never made to the previous owner either, despite his patience in delaying advertising the pier for sale publicly for 2 years whilst Cllr Chris Hughes and co messed around with an abortive attempt at a Lottery funding application.

Now then, are you happy with the £26,000 of your money that Gordon Brown has given to the banks?

TO COMPLETELY RESTORE the pier would cost about 10 pence per head of population in the UK… yet you have given the bankers 260,000 times that amount… Happy about that?, or do you think the money could have been better spent?

  5. tell u what! my wife and myself would quite happy give well over a 10p each to save the pier (and we both live over 40 miles away from colwyn) we both honestly think its well worth while saving- colwyn/rhos/llandudno are fantastic areas
