Have just returned from the State opening, feeling desperately sorry for the Queen having to repeat the preposterous catalogue of electioneering claptrap that the Government put into her mouth.
They know that very little, if any, of it can be delivered before next March, when Parliament is likely to be dissolved, yet they have Her Majesty assure us, in all solemnity, that they will most certainly be establishing an elected House of Lords.
If ever the Queen demonstrated she deserves every penny of the Civil List, today was surely the day.

Surely this is the perfect illustration of the ridiculous nature of monarchical democracy. It was a pointless exercise that should never happen again. The people voted for the government, and will vote for the next one, so what part should the Queen ever play in the run upto an election, or indeed at all in the parliamentry houses of our democracy. It should all be elected, always.
Mr. Allwell, it’s showmanship, panache and adds a colour to our constitution which is envied all over the world because no one does it like us.
Sadly, when we all come completely under the heel of the Brussels Mandarins, all this will gradually be abolished as we become nothing but a European region. Our monarchy has outlived numerous American Presidents, and countless European popinjays. Up till now…….Long may she reign.
Well said, Monty.
The whole tradition is based on pomp and circumstance. It bears no relation to the system we call democracy, and we end up with situations like that yesterday in which the Queen is reading out a parties manifesto. In essence she was a puppet, allbeit a very expensive one. Is that something to be proud of? As for Europe, I agree, politics should be about local communities not huge government and unelected officials.
The Queen reading out the manifesto is a reminder of our centuries long road to democracy; When the monarchy goes, others will seek to be king of the castle. When King Farouk was deposed, he said “One day there will only be 5 kings left; aces, diamonds, hearts clubs and the king of England”
She is above politics, a reminder of times when the monarch ruled as God’s representative on earth. That’s why she reads the manifesto, allegedly the will of the people (sic), as opposed to the monarch.
Royalty is about the heart, not the head. Too true I’m proud of it.
“A reminder of times when the monarch ruled as God’s representative on Earth”
The same times when we thought the Earth was flat? Good times…
God, the Queen or any King should have no place in democracy, keep them to ‘admire’ and be ‘proud’ of but they should be self-funding.
No one should be ‘above’ politics, you complain about unelected officials in Europe, but stand up for unelected officials in Britain? I assume it is not the ‘unelected’ bit you oppose? God – unelected, Royalty – unelected. Seems you are a fan of being dictated to not represented?
Did anyone read the article by that idiot Ian Parri in last fridays’Daily Post.I thought that the Telivised proceedings of the State opening of Parliament wonderful, far better H.M.The Queen on the throne than Herr Rumpty from Belgium.
Mr. Allwell cannot see the difference between an unelected Eurotyrant and the Monarch. The latter wields no statutory power, only an affective power over the hearts of Britons to which she has dedicated a lifetime, and could so easily be lost by her likely heirs. She is there by the consent of the majority, unlike Euro boys and girls.
G Allwell what do you think of having an Englishman as your prince?
